The holidays are upon us…can you feel it?!
I’ve been shopping in home decor stores to find some inspiration for my new condo these last few weeks, and I was shocked to see Christmas decorations lining the shelves! It isn’t even Halloween yet!
It may only be October, but the holiday season will be here FAST. Before you know it, it’ll be holiday parties and cocktails and appetizers galore!
We all know the food served at most holiday parties isn’t of the nutritious variety. Unless you’re friends with a bunch of health nuts. In which case you’ll have probably eaten your weight in hummus by the time January 1 rolls around.
But I digress 😉
Whenever I’m invited to a party where I’m asked to bring something (because let’s be honest – this girl isn’t hosting any parties of her own!), I always try to think of something that will please the crowd but will also have some nutritional value.
Veggie trays with a yummy dip are easy but kind of boring. Giant festive salads tend to not keep well unless you use kale (and I’ll let you in on a little secret – I don’t really like kale). So what’s a party-goer to bring??
Bacon-wrapped medjool dates.
Yup, you heard me. Sweet little medjool dates, wrapped in delicious, savoury bacon.
I first tried bacon-wrapped dates at an amazing tapas bar that was only open for a span of 3 months back in 2013. I went back to that restaurant FOUR TIMES just for those bacon-wrapped dates. And then I started making them at home.
And then I forgot about them for 4 years. Why? I’m not sure. But all that matters is that they’re back in my life, and they can be in yours too.
Bacon-wrapped medjool dates are sure to be a crowd-pleaser at your next get-together. The sweet and savoury combination is to die for, and if you’re feeling creative, you can stuff the dates with roasted almonds, goat cheese, or even peanut butter! I’ve tried all of the above and I can attest to their deliciousness.
Are these a light, low-cal appy option? Nope. But the medjool dates are filled with fiber, antioxidants, potassium, and B vitamins, making these a sweet and savoury snack you can feel good about. Betcha can’t say that about plain old pigs in a blanket! If you want to up the good-for-you ante even more, use nitrate-free bacon from a local farmer wherever possible.
I also recommend using Natural Delights Pitted Medjool Dates for this recipe. Out of all the dates I’ve tried, Natural Delights’ are the biggest and juiciest, making them ideal for wrapping in bacon and stuffing with delicious things. Plus, not having to pit them is a big bonus.
Bacon-Wrapped Medjool Dates
- You Will Need:
20 pitted medjool dates (if you don’t have time to pit dates like me, grab Natural Delights’ pitted dates!)
- 10 strips of your favourite bacon (bonus points if it’s nitrate-free)
- Optional: goat cheese, roasted almonds, or peanut butter for stuffing the dates
- Encouraged: 20 tooth picks for holding the bacon and dates together
1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. Cut the 10 strips of bacon in half, giving you 20 pieces.
3. If stuffing the dates, fill with stuffing of choice.
4. Wrap the bacon around the dates. If using a tooth pick, place a tooth pick through the date to hold the bacon in place. If not using tooth picks, place the side with the end of the bacon strip down on a foil-lined baking sheet.
5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until bacon is crispy, turning halfway through.
6. Serve on your favourite platter and prepare to WOW your fellow partygoers!
