Hello friends!

I’ve been thinking about how my life has changed since I started blogging, and one of the things that sticks out the most is the amazing connections I’ve made with inspirational people all over the world. I’ve shared a lot of these stories through the Inspiring Humans series, and I’m going to continue spreading the inspirational love with my Featured Blogger series!

Over the next few weeks I’ll be shining the spotlight on some of the blogger buddies I’ve made these past few years. These ultra-inspirational women each started out with different goals for their blogs, but they’ve touched a number of people in different ways.

We’re kicking things off with Di Hickman from Workout with Di. You may remember the guest post Di wrote last month about plant-based nutrition for endurance athletes. In addition to holding a wealth of knowledge about vegan diets, Di also has some really inspiring words to share! I won’t make you wait any longer 😉 Let’s get to it!

Featured Blogger: Di Hickman | Evolution by Ariana

Ariana Fotinakis (AF): What is your blog’s name?

Di Hickman (DH): Workout with Di

AF: How long have you been blogging?

DH: 5 years. But only ‘seriously’ for the last year. Plus prior to that I had a blog in another niche industry. So I’ve been blogging a while!

AF: Why did you decide to start blogging?

DH: I decided to start blogging as a way to keep in touch with family and friends in the UK. I moved to USA in 2001 and it was tough to be far away and keep in touch with everyone so I started a blog. Initially it was all photo’s and scrapbooking type stuff, then dogs, and then we got our greencards and I started to work in fitness and decided to make a fitness blog because I was tired of seeing all the misinformation online.

All the silly challenges to do “100 crunches a day for a 6 pack”, or “100 squats a day for a pert butt”. One of my mottos is “workout smarter not longer”. Initially I was afraid of putting myself “out there” but now I figure what the hell. So I decided to start a blog that cut through the BS and told things like it is.

Other reasons I started blogging: I’m tired of the excuses. There are people working out with disabilities, illness, and more. Instead of feeling inspired GET inspired. Let it light a fire under your ass. I’m a plant based personal trainer, I’m a cancer survivor, I have a genetic kidney disease, I don’t let anything stop me!

Sure some days might be more challenging than others, and I know when to rest but you get your butt active. Whether in the gym, in the park, homegym or walking the dog. Do something other than sitting down! {Ariana’s note: fire is definitely lit!}

AF: What do you hope to achieve with your blog?

DH: Education, inspiration and motivation. I have enlarged kidneys from Polycystic Kidney Disease, I eat a plant based diet, and I’m a fitness instructor and personal trainer in my 40’s. I’m passionate about my job, and continue to educate myself regarding all aspects of health and fitness.

Because I want people to make changes, I want them to read my blog and say “hey, if Di is doing this at 43 with crappy kidneys, then I can do it to!”. I want people to see what is possible on a plant based diet. That you can run, bike, swim and build muscle just fine! In fact you thrive!

AF: Is there anything you offer through your blog you think our readers would benefit from?

DH: One of the biggest excuses I hear for not working out “I don’t have time”. Make time with my free eBook on 25 time saving fitness tips. {You can download the eBook here.} There are also free workouts on my YouTube channel.

AF: What’s something that’s got you excited right now?

DH:  As of next year I will have been working as a fitness professional for 20 years! One of the benefits of being older is more experience. I’ve taught or tried just about every fitness format available including: Running, trampolining, cycling, swimming, bodypump, bodycombat, kickboxing, spinning, aqua, step, hi-lo, zumba (where you first me Ariana!), pilates, yoga and more. Having a pretty full bag of tricks to dig into make me pretty unique as a trainer and blogger.

On top of that I do all of this as a vegan. I’ve been vegan 2 1/2 years and vegetarian for 20 years before that. I’ve run 5k, 10K and 1/2 marathons, and a couple of duathlons. I even placed multiple times in my age group. I took 2015 off from racing to focus on my yoga teacher training. Goals for 2016 and beyond include more racing, triathlon, and possibly bikini competition.

I’m proud of the fact that I’m 43 and still making goals for myself, and achieving them!

Thank you, Di! If that doesn’t light a fire under your ass, I don’t know what will! 😉

Yay! I started my blog as more of a “scrapbooking” type journal first too! I really like her reasoning for what she wants to achieve with her blog! (Tis not unlike mine! 😛 ) Go Di! <3
