Ohhhh egg nog lattes.
Something about the holidays always makes me crave warm, cozy drinks. Maybe it’s because of the copious amounts of hot chocolate I used to drink this time of year. Maybe it’s the copious amounts of Bailey’s I used to add to said hot chocolate as I got older 😛
Or maybe it’s because coffee shops do such a good job at associating sickeningly-sweet drinks with the holiday festivities, that we can’t help but want to swim in red cups of goodness.
Whatever it is, it never fails – the holidays roll around, I dive into a peppermint mocha/gingerbread latte/egg nog latte, and I immediately remember that 10 pumps of sugar in one drink and I don’t jive very well.
And that says a lot coming from someone with a sweet tooth like mine 😉
Because of this, I held off on indulging in one of these drinks for quite some time this year. As much as I wanted one, I knew that even opting for a “half-sweet” variation would still leave that weird taste in my mouth that 5 pumps of liquid sugar tends to give.
But it started to really get to me.
Sure, the holidays are about family and all that good stuff. But they’re also about warm, cozy drinks!!!
Mugs of hot chocolate while you walk in the snow! Warm cups of coffee by the fire!! I’ve given up my beloved Bailey’s and hot chocolate; can’t a girl have a little fun?!
So I took matters into my own hands and whipped a homemade variation of the egg nog latte. Dairy-free, refined sugar-free, as per my naturopath’s gentle suggestions 😉
This vegan Egg Nog Latte is sweetened with medjool dates, giving it a touch of caramel-flavour with low-glycemic sweetness. The fibre from the dates will also help to balance your blood sugar, should you choose to indulge in any holiday cookies with your Vegan Egg Nog Latte 😉
By using spices you’ve likely already got in your cupboards, you’ll get that delicious egg nog flavour without a bunch of scary ingredients you can’t pronounce. And while you can use any non-dairy milk you like, I opted for almond milk.
To get some froth on top of your latte, you’ve got two options. If you’ve got a milk frother, you can froth the almond milk once it’s been warmed with the spices. Slowly pour it over your brewed coffee or espresso and you should get some nice froth on top!
If you’re like me and you don’t have a frother, blending your coffee with your heated almond milk will also produce some froth. Just give it a quick spin; if you blend it too long the almond milk might heat up too much and curdle. #Gross
All in all, this is a drink you can feel good about serving your guests this holiday season.
Or, you know, you could just drink all the Vegan Egg Nog Lattes yourself 😉
You Will Need:
- 4oz espresso or 4-8 ounces strongly brewed coffee
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 Natural Delights medjool dates
- 2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice
- Blend the almond milk, dates, vanilla, and spices. Place the blended mixture in a medium sauce pan and warm over low-medium heat for 4-6 minutes. Be sure not to let it bubble or burn!
- Brew your espresso or coffee to your preference.
- Option 1: If you’re using a milk frother, froth the date-sweetened almond milk mixture, then pour over espresso/coffee.
- Option 2: If you’re using a blender, pour the date-sweetened almond milk mixture and espresso/coffee in a blender. Blend for 10 seconds, then pour into a mug.
