Decolonial Facilitation for Teams + organizations
“Regardless of ancestry, we are all colonized people.”
- Nikki Sanchez, “Decolonization is for Everyone” TED Talk
Turtle Island may have been colonized by a select group of individuals, but the lasting impact has touched both Indigenous and non-Indigenous folks. We are not living in ways that are aligned with our true nature, and this is reflected in the mental health crisis, the destruction of the planet, and on-going violence between + towards groups of individuals.
“Decolonization” is often referred to as a state of being—an end destination to achieve. But unless we abolish all of our current systems—financial, educational, governance, housing, and otherwise—we cannot truly decolonize because these systems are inherently colonial.
For a moment, imagine what happens when you hurriedly try to repot a plant that’s been in one pot it’s entire life. You quickly pull it up out of the dirt, no care and attention paid to the roots that have tangled themselves amidst one another or the new little shoots that have grown. This plant that is disrupted with little care and attention for the after-effects goes into shock. It halts growth. It might even die.
Instead, if you slowly loosen the soil around the plant and gently create space around the roots before beginning to carefully untangle them, the plant has a much better chance of thriving in its new pot.
This is how i view the decolonial journey.
We create capacity within our nervous systems so we can slowly loosen our foundation. We begin to examine the ways in which colonization has impacted us, the stories we carry within our ancestry, and the ways in which we continue to uphold harmful systems.
Then, with a hefty dose of self-compassion, we untangle. We examine which beliefs belong to us and which belong to colonialism. We reclaim our sense of Self and our medicine, and then we call upon that medicine to make a difference within our communities.
I work with both non-profit and for-profit organizations who are ready to deepen into their decolonial journeys. These small, medium, or large organizations are ready to move past colonial mindsets and do not need to be educated on why colonialism is harmful to us all.
My work is available both virtually and in-person. Current available offerings include:
Untangling from Colonization Keynote Presentation
Decolonial Workplace Well-Being: a series of workplace wellness workshops rooted in Indigenous values and reconciliACTION, hosted in collaboration with Vancity Labyrinth
Guided breathwork sessions that increase resilience and nervous system capacity
